There has been a great deal of controversy over the creation of the Frank Drago Master Plan. Now that the consultant’s recommended plan has been completed, and community consultation has closed, I feel I can provide my thoughts. And a novel idea…

Edible Gardens
Every time I do the grocery shopping I can’t help but be surprised at the cost of fruit and vegetables; after all we can grow these things ourselves.
Often though people don’t have sufficient space, which why I’m hoping to open up some of the City of Bayswater public land and allow residents to produce food. Continue reading Edible Gardens
The Most Historic Tree In Bayswater

This tree is significant and historic on a number of fronts. If you are a resident within the City of Bayswater and are not aware of its significance then please read on….

For many years the City of Bayswater has pursued the option of merging with Bassendean. This even pre-dated the State government’s local government reform process which was in motion when I was elected in 2011. Despite the millions spent, it now seems that reform may now be off the State government’s agenda, so I thought I’d do an analysis on whether ratepayers would benefit from reform.
Let’s talk money.

Is The White Flag For The Amalgamations, Or All Local Government Reform?

“I’ve failed, I’ve put up the white flag,” the premier told ABC radio today. The big question is whether this white flag relates to the entire local government reform process, or merely the LG’s which were given the right to vote against amalgamations, and duly did so. Continue reading Is The White Flag For The Amalgamations, Or All Local Government Reform?
The Ward System May Still Occur
There has been a change of direction from the Department of Local Government with their announcement today of a stream-lined process for implementing the ward system. This is good news for the community. Continue reading The Ward System May Still Occur
Free Wi-Fi in Morley
Morley has been identified by the State government as being a ‘Strategic Metropolitan Centre’. As a strategic metropolitan centre, the Morley activity centre is second only to the central Perth area and of equal importance to other major centres such as Fremantle, Joondalup, Midland and Mandurah. As such I think there should be a free Wi-Fi service. Continue reading Free Wi-Fi in Morley
Chimney Stack Golf Day
The City of Bayswater ratepayers own the Maylands Golf Course, and I frequently go there with my family on Sunday’s to enjoy the vista, cheap food, safe surrounds for my children and live music (specifically it is the Swanbank Bar and Cafe). A couple of years ago the manager at the time, Fred, introduced me to a local, David, who had started an annual social golf day for the locals. Continue reading Chimney Stack Golf Day
Heritage
Since arriving in this fine country from England, aged 13, it was abundantly clear that preservation of buildings was never high on anyone’s agenda. Unfortunate not just for history’s sake but also financially as well, because without historical buildings an area will often struggle to form an identity. Continue reading Heritage
Dept of Local Govt fail to understand the issues
As anyone with the slightest interest in the local government reform process would know, the abolishment of the ward system has caused great consternation amongst some local governments, elected members and community members. I have written about the importance of a ward system previously. The Department of Local Government has belatedly released a paper on the process to implement the ward system after they were recommended to be abolished by the Local Government Advisory Board. Continue reading Dept of Local Govt fail to understand the issues
No Wards = Less Power to the People
The Premier and the Minister for Local Government today announced their response to the Local Government Advisory Board’s (LGAB) recommendations relating to Metropolitan Local Government Reform. There is one aspect which is highly worrying to me, and that is the abolition of the ward system for a number of local governments. Continue reading No Wards = Less Power to the People
