The City of Bayswater ratepayers own the Maylands Golf Course, and I frequently go there with my family on Sunday’s to enjoy the vista, cheap food, safe surrounds for my children and live music (specifically it is the Swanbank Bar and Cafe). A couple of years ago the manager at the time, Fred, introduced me to a local, David, who had started an annual social golf day for the locals.
For the last eight years David and Gail have been organising the ‘Chimney Stack Trophy Golf Day’ so that the nearby local residents can play a social competition of golf. It was designed simply as a way for the locals to meet each other. As can be seen from the plethora of prizes in the picture below, it has grown and captured the hearts of businesses keen to show their support for this community event. As a shout out to some of the sponsors, thanks Rottnest Fast Ferries, WA Cleanskin Cellars, Bredero Shaw and Steel Blue Work Boots (which I am now assured are the most comfortable work boots in the world) for being involved. Also Nigel who runs both the golf course and the Swanbank venue for his continued promotion and support.*David & Gail, and all the goodies.
I am always impressed by any local community event so was keen to be involved and show my support. I missed last year because I was on a family holiday but fortunately could make this year’s event. It was fantastic. A good 80+ people mingled and met neighbours they hadn’t previously met, everyone won something and everyone had an enjoyable game of Ambrose followed by an excellent dinner.
I attended with my friend Stephen, and fortunately we were teamed with a lovely couple, Gary and Donna, who are competent golfers and carried us to victory. Stephen and my contribution came from our very poor handicaps! Nevertheless, winners are grinners.
David and Gail, it is people like you who selflessly give their time to create and run events like this, who create tight communities. Thank you for what you do.
